Transforming Breakout Learning Spaces at International School of Brussels

Overview

Zioxi partnered with Mobelsa Workspace Solutions and an interior designer to reimagine the open-plan breakout spaces at The International School of Brussels (ISB). The goal: to transform transitional areas between classrooms into vibrant, engaging environments that support both collaborative learning and quiet study.

The Challenge

ISB sought to create multifunctional breakout zones that would encourage student engagement beyond the classroom while maintaining a cohesive flow within the school’s open-plan layout. These spaces needed to accommodate a variety of learning styles, offer flexibility, and remain inviting throughout the school day, all without disrupting the flow of student traffic.

Our Solution

Working closely with Mobelsa’s interior designer, Zioxi helped deliver a creative and functional design that balanced aesthetics with utility. Key elements included:

  • Playful Design Aesthetic: The breakout spaces feature bright, bold colours and unconventional, eye-catching furniture that spark curiosity and creativity.
  • Flexible Functionality: Carefully chosen furnishings support both group collaboration and individual focus, providing students with the autonomy to choose how and where they learn best.
  • Zoning with the BookWorm: The Zioxi BookWorm not only added ample book and resource storage but also cleverly served as a boundary, subtly delineating breakout zones from corridors while maintaining a sense of openness.

Impact

The redesigned spaces have been enthusiastically received by students and staff alike. They foster a sense of ownership and freedom in learning, encourage informal collaboration, and create a fun, inspiring environment that complements the school’s dynamic ethos. The clever integration of form and function ensures the spaces remain practical without compromising on visual appeal.
